At the second weekend of January, the delegation of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena participated at the 5th Heidelberg National MUN Conference 2015, at the Neue Universität building in the heart of Heidelberg’s beautiful old town.

The conference featured two committees. In the first committee, the Security Council as single delegate committee, the delegates represented: Jordan, Spain and Venezuela. The topic ‘Containing the Islamic State’ was up for debate. The delegates had to seek for solutions and new ways to put an effective stop to ISIL in the short term while keeping in mind the stability of the middle and near east in a long term perspective.

In the second committee, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) as double delegate committee discussed the topic ‘Development through Fair Trade’. The delegates represented: Bangladesh, France, Sweden and Turkey. The delegates had to negotiate between the positions of the Global North and the Global South, while trying to accomplish what the WTO has so far failed to do: produce a new consensus on fair trade and development.

To honour her active cooperation and great spirit of diplomacy in the Security Council during the draft resolution, Julia Kossiski get a Honourable Mention. That was a great success for the whole delegation of Jena.

Lively debates and verbal disputes during formal and informal debates left an impression on the delegates and prepare them for WorldMUN 2015 in Seoul.

We would like to thank the University Heidelberg-organisation team for this great weekend.
